Description
MONSTRELET (Enguerrand de). Les Croniques de France, d'Angleterre, d'Escoce, d'Espaigne, de Bretaigne, de Gascongne, de Flandres et lieux circonvoisins. Paris, François Regnault, 1518. 3 volumes in one folio, pink morocco, Du Seuil decoration, spine gilt, gilt edges, cloth-covered slipcase (Bedford). Fourth edition of this famous chronicle of the Hundred Years' War, in which the text continues until 1516.
Beautiful two-column Gothic printing, decorated with three woodcuts in the text depicting the author at his lectern, a king receiving homage from a vassal and the appearance of Christ to a copyist monk. The title of each volume is decorated with a large grotesque initial with a stork's head and François Regnault's elephant mark, repeated at the end of the volume.
Monstrelet's chronicle is one of the main historical sources for the first half of the 15th century. Comprising two books, it covers the years 1400 to 1444. The undated editio princeps was published around 1503 by Antoine Vérard.
"Connected with the House of Luxembourg, the author was criticised for his partiality towards the Counts of Saint-Pol and the House of Burgundy [...] This meticulous and detailed work is the result of a close collaboration between the Counts of Saint-Pol and the House of Burgundy. [...] However, this meticulous follower of Froissart is irreplaceable for the history of France, Flanders and England in the first half of the 15th century, as he accumulated, admittedly in some disarray, a wealth of information and even documents that would otherwise be unknown. The third book contained in the printed editions, which continues his chronicle until 1467, is not by his hand. This suite is attributed to Mathieu d'Escouchy" (Guy Bechtel).
A sumptuous copy produced by the great London bookbinder Francis Bedford (1799-1883).
From the libraries of Henry and Alfred Huth (1916, V, no. 5072), with bookplate; John Burns (1944, no. 454), with signature dated 1917; William Foyle (2000, no. 236), with bookplate; and H. P. Kraus (2003, no. 452), with bookplate.
Some discreet repairs, a few stains and small wet spots, spine faded.
