Description
MONTAIGNE (Michel). Book of Essays. Divided into two parts. Last edition increased by two very ample tables, of the most memorable things contained in it. Lyon, pour Gabriel de la Grange, libraire d'Avignon, 1593. 2 volumes in one in-8, soft vellum with covers, title and bookplate in brown ink on the first cover (contemporary binding). Fifth edition of the Essais, and the first posthumous. It is extremely rare. It is a Lyon counterfeit of the third original edition, published in Paris in 1588 by Abel L'Angelier. L'Angelier took legal action before the Paris parliament against La Grange and other booksellers in Lyon to enforce his privilege, but without success. This edition is divided into two parts, comprising the first two books and the third. For the first time, it includes an analytical table of the contents of the Essais in the form of an index. Early handwritten bookplate on the title and first cover of the binding: Deconstans. Perhaps this was Jacques de Constans (1547-1621), a Protestant poet from Poitou, a friend of the court of Navarre and of Agrippa d'Aubigné? Some handwritten marginal annotations and corrections on pp. 46, 47, 137, 339, 402-407, 412, 414, 420, 483. 5 missing index ff. and 1 blank f. have been replaced in facsimile (ff. Aa1-3/6-8), small angular lack with loss of some letters pp. 583-4, two quires slightly dislocated, vellum lacks on covers. Sayce & Maskell, n°5 - Desan, n°22 - Baudrier, I, 227 - Adams, M-1621 - Tchemerzine, IV, 874.
