NEANDER (Michael). Opus aureum et scholasticum, in quo continentur Pythagoræ Carmina aurea, Phocylidis, Theognidis et aliorum poemata... edita omnia studio et cura Michaelis Neandri Soraviensis. Leipzig, Hans Steinmann, 1577. 3 parts in one folio volume, saddle-skin stamped on wood, double framed with cold roulettes, allegorical plaque in the centre, initials MGCP and date 1577 on the first board, five-ribbed spine, smooth edges, metal clasps (Period Germanic binding dated 1577). New, enlarged edition of this imposing pedagogical collection published by Michael Neander (1525-1595). A pupil of Melanchthon, Neander was rector of the gymnasia at Nordhausen and Ilfeld.
The work, printed in Greek and Latin, includes the Golden Verses of Pythagoras, the Maxims of Phocylides, the elegiac poems of Theognis of Megara, The Dream or the Cockerel by Lucian of Samosata, the Apologue on the choice of Hercules reported by Xenophon, etc. The first edition was published in Basel in 1559.
