Description
PALÆONYDORUS (Johannes). Liber trimerestus, anaphoricus, penagyricus, de principio et processu ordinis carmelitici. Mainz, Peter von Friedberg for Johannes von Kronenberg, 1497. In-4 of [74] ff (sign. A-H8 I10); cold-stamped sowskin on wood, double framed with fillets and scrolls, four-ribbed mute spine, smooth edges (pastiche binding). Extremely rare first edition. The Dutch Carmelite John of Oudewater (1433-1507), born in Oudewater in the province of Utrecht and who died in the monastery of Malines, where he entered in 1455, distinguished himself as a preacher and historian. He sided with the famous Benedictine abbot Johannes Trithemius against the Dominican Wigand in the controversy that arose in 1494 over the Immaculate Conception. He wrote a number of theological, ascetical and historical works, which he signed Johannes Palæonydorus or Joannes de Aqua Veteri. The Liber trimerestus is his main work, praised by Trithemus as one of the best works on the origins and history of the Order of Carmel since the prophet Elijah. It is prefaced by three letters from Matthäus Herben, Johannes Damius de Spanheim and Rutger Sycamber. The work was printed by Peter von Friedberg, the publisher of Trithème in Mainz. It is printed in Gothic script. The copy has not been rubricated. Only two public institutions hold a copy in France (Metz and Reims), and three in the United States (Harvard, Miami University, Huntington Library). A copy with good margins, very well preserved in an excellent imitation binding. Tiny worm hole in last ten leaves; marginal break repaired on last leaf.
