Description
POLYBE. Ιστοριων βιβλια E. Historiarum libri quinque, opera Vincentii Obsopœi in lucem editi. Hagenau, Johann Setzer, 1530. 2 parts in one small volume in-folio, speckled calf, double gilt fillet, gilt roulette framed with fleurons at the corners, ornate spine, inner lace, mottled edges (18th century binding). First edition of Polybius' great work. It is very rare. The Greek text of the first five books of Polybius is published for the first time in this edition by the German humanist Vincentius Obsopœus, alias Vinzenz Heidecker (c. 1485-1539), who dedicated it to George of Brandenburg-Ansbach. The original text is followed by the Latin translation by Niccolò Perotti, Archbishop of Siponto, published in Rome in 1473. The five books of the History of the Roman Republic in this edition are the only ones to have survived in their entirety: the other thirty-five books composed by Polybius are either lost or incomplete, such as the fragment of the sixth book, which had been published the previous year in Rome. A very fine Alsatian printing, produced in Haguenau on the presses of Johann Setzer, in fine Greek characters and Roman letters. The volume is embellished with large historiated lettering on a black background. From the library of the Theological Institute of Connecticut, with dry stamp. Spine rebound (original boards reapplied), spotting and worm gallery in the margins of a few leaves, small light wetnesses. Adams, P-1801 - Brunet, IV, 789 - VD16, P4082 - USTC, 684676.
