Description
POSTH (Johannes). Tetrasticha in Ovidii Metam[orphoseon] lib[ri] XV. Frankfurt, Georg Corvinus, Sigmund Feyerabend and the heirs of Wigand Gallus, 1569. Small oblong in-4, stamped sowskin, triple framing of roulettes and cold fillets, mute spine, red edges (pastiche binding). Second edition of this book, much sought-after for its engravings by Virgil Solis.
The work includes a title printed in red and black within an engraved frame and 178 wood-engraved figures, the same as in the original edition of 1563, but enhanced in this edition with beautiful wood-engraved frames of great variety.
This suite of emblems taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses is one of the best-known works by Virgil Solis (1514-1562), the famous Nuremberg draughtsman and wood and copper engraver. Each figure is surmounted by an indication of the subject and a Latin quatrain by the Neolatin poet Johannes Posth of Germersheim (1537-1597) with its German translation at the foot.
Light marginal spotting on a few leaves, small stain on the engraving on p. 129.
Adams, P-2035 - Brunet, IV, 288 and Suppl, II, 119.
