Description
PRIMALEON OF GREECE (The History of), continuing that of Palmerin d'Olive Emperor of Constantinople his father. Lyon, [Benoît puis] Pierre Rigaud, [1587]-1618. 4 volumes in-16, fawn calf, spine decorated, interior roulette, red edges (18th century binding). Famous Spanish novel of chivalry, translated into French by François de Vernassal for the first book and by Gabriel Chappuys for the other three. "Each of the four volumes of L'Histoire de Primaleon de Grèce was printed or reprinted at different times and by different publishers; for the 17th century, Pierre Rigaud reprinted volume I in 1618, volume II in 1612 and volume III in 1609" (Merland-Parguez). Here, volume III was printed by Benoît Rigaud in 1587 and volume IV by his heirs in 1597. Very rare set in uniform eighteenth-century bindings. From the library of Charles-Paul de Bourgevin de Moligny (1713-1794), commissaire des Gardes du corps du Roi et conseiller au parlement de Paris, with armorial bookplate. His collection was sold by Guillaume Debure on 22 Floréal Year III (11 May 1795). Corners worn, rubbing and minor damage to headpieces, copy a little short of margins, scattered pale spotting, marginal worm spot in 2nd volume, bookplates partially scratched.
