Description
SPAGNOLI (Battista). Carmina de beata virgine maria : quæ & parthenice dicuntur. Paris, Jean Petit, September 1504. Small in-4, stiff vellum, smooth spine (Early binding). Hard to find Parisian edition by Jean Petit of Parthenice Mariana, a famous Latin poem composed in honour of the Virgin Mary by the Italian Carmelite Battista Spagnoli, known as Baptiste de Mantoue (1447-1516). This is a scholastic edition, printed in double-spaced Roman type for annotation purposes, and decorated with an attractive woodcut Annunciation on the verso of the title. It is not described in the usual bibliographies. A copy copiously annotated in the margins and between the lines. Handwritten running titles and foliation. Handwritten mention to the title. Missing the last leaf l8, probably blank. First and last leaves worn; small chips, tears and old repairs sometimes deleting some characters; several leaves reinforced in the inner margin; wetness and browned leaves; some leaves in quires c, k and l bound out of order, 2 ff. unbound in quire g. The copy has been placed in an antique binding.
