Description
[VITRUVE]. RUSCONI (Giovanni Antonio). Della architettura. Venice, Gioliti, 1590, folio, stiff vellum, gilt border, smooth spine decorated, blue edges (18th century Italian binding). First edition of this Italian translation of Vitruvius.
It is the only text published by Rusconi, an architect and decorator of Venetian origin.
Giovanni Antonio Rusconi (c. 1520-1587) began his career in Dalmatia as a military architect in the service of the Serenissima, before returning to Venice, where he worked with Palladio. This translation was not printed until after his death, as Palladio, fearing comparison with the work of Barbaro and Palladio, did not want it to appear during his lifetime. It was eventually printed by Gabriele Giolito's heirs, Giovanni and Giovanni Paulo.
A superb woodcut illustration, including a superb title frame and 160 woodcuts based on Rusconi's drawings. Some of these woodcuts are inspired by traditional Vitruvian iconography, while others are the author's own invention.
A copy of the second printing in an attractive eighteenth-century Italian binding.
Ex-libris with the Cœuvre coat of arms and the motto "Omnia cum tempore".
From the Jacques Bemberg architecture library (2014, no. 23), with bookplate.
Title, dedication and table leaves reinforced in the outer margin, and minor browning in the margins of a few leaves.
BAL, III, 2880 - Fowler, n°280 - Cicognara, n°640 - Mortimer, n°551.
