Description
BAUDIER (Dominique). Amores. Amsterdam, Louis Elzevier, 1638. In-12, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Masson-Debonnelle). The only edition of this curious collection, published by Petrus Scriverius.
The Neolatine letters and poems in which Baudier (1561-1613) recounts his misadventures in love occupy only a hundred or so pages, while "the rest offers a very well-done selection of little pieces relating to love and marriage", explains Willems.
An intaglio portrait of the author is printed on the verso of the sixth leaf.
A wide-margined copy (142 x 84 mm) finely bound by Masson and Debonnelle, Capé's workers and successors in 1867, active until 1885.
From the libraries of Samuel Ashton Thompson-Yates, Cecil Thompson and Austin Smith, with their bookplates.
Willems, n°961 - Brunet, I, 703.
