Description
BOSSUET (Jacques-Bénigne). Set of two autograph manuscripts, including a first draft manuscript of a chapter of the Politique drawn from Sacred Scripture and a duty of the Grand Dauphin corrected by Bossuet. ▪ Notes autographes de Bossuet au sujet du serment que les rois font lors de leur sacre. 8 ff. in-4 (ch. 739A-739D). Important autograph manuscript of 15 pages. This is a passage from the Politique tirée des propres paroles de l'Écriture Sainte (proposition XVIII in book VII, article V; ed. Droz, 1967, pp. 266-269), which was not published until after Bossuet's death in 1709. "This proposal is based on the Cérémonial français de Godefroy... One can easily find this first version, reworked for the definitive text, under the published text" (Jacques Le Brun). Pronounced staining affecting the text at the bottom of the leaves. ▪ Fragment d'un devoir d'histoire du Grand Dauphin corrigé de la main de Bossuet, son précepteur. 2 pp. in-4 largely crossed out and corrected. These pages correspond to the development of Bossuet's Histoire de France concerning Philippe V dit le Long (Œuvres complètes, ed. Lachat, 1864, t. XXV, pp. 95-96), and more particularly in this passage, the persecution of the Jews after the plague of 1320. Bossuet (1627-1704) was appointed tutor to the Dauphin Louis de France (1661-1711), son of Louis XIV, on 5 September 1670, when his pupil was nine years old. Three ink stains on the recto, minor marginal damage to a few letters. Two autograph letters signed by Jacques Le Brun (1931-2020), a Bossuet specialist, concerning these two pieces are attached: "All these manuscripts are very interesting and deserve to be published with rigour: they make it possible to correct the currently known versions of these texts...".
