Description
CAVACCIO (Giacomo). Illustrium anachoretarum elogia, sive religiosi viri musæum. Venice, Pinelli, 1625. Small in-4, fawn morocco, wide gilt border, double frame of straight and curved listels in brown wax, compartments decorated with small irons of branches, cherubs and gilt scrolls, coat of arms in the centre, different on each cover, smooth spine decorated with a gilt twist, later linings in Augsburg paper, pink silk ties. Second edition of this book sought after for the magnificent copper engravings by Francesco Valesio which adorn it. The illustrations include a title-frontispiece and 31 full-page copper engravings depicting hermits and anchorites surrounded by wilderness, plus a view of Bassano signed with the monogram LP. A copy in a rich Italian binding with the coat of arms of the city of Rome on the first cover and of a patrician family on the second. Binding restored, rubbed and slightly missing, endpapers renewed. Brunet, I, 1693.
