Description
[COTIN (Charles). Odes royales sur les mariages des princesses de Nemours. S.l.n.d. [1665]. In-8, 37 pp. bradel grey boards (19th century binding). Very rare first edition of these odes by Abbé Cotin (1604-1681), chaplain to the king and poet, elected to the Académie française in 1655. He is best remembered today as one of the main "victims" of Boileau's Satires and the acknowledged model for Trissotin, the pedantic dowry chaser in Molière's Femmes savantes. These three Odes royales celebrate the marriage of Charles-Amédée de Savoie-Nemours' two daughters in 1665: Marie-Jeanne-Baptiste (1644-1724), known as Mademoiselle de Nemours, to Charles-Emmanuel II of Savoy, and Marie-Françoise-Élisabeth (1646-1683), known as Mademoiselle d'Aumale, to Alphonse VI of Portugal. The CCFr lists only two copies of this booklet, both of which are held by the BnF. There is no f. A2 (pp. 3-4), as in the BnF copy digitised on Gallica, and the booklet opens with a simple false title.
