Description
DE BRUNE (Johan). Emblemata of Zinne-werck. Amsterdam, Abraham Latham and Jan Jacobszoon Schipper, s.d. [ca. 1680]. In-4, stiff vellum, smooth spine, handwritten title on spine (Dutch binding of the period). Fourth edition of this fine book of emblems originally published in 1624.
It is decorated with a title-frontispiece and 52 mid-page figures engraved on copper by Willem van de Passe, Johannes Gelle, Christoph Le Blon, Albert Poel and Jan Swelinck after drawings by Adriaen van der Venne.
These engravings - of exceptional quality, according to Landwehr - abound with realistic details of everyday life, interiors and costumes from the Flemish Golden Age.
An attractive copy in contemporary Dutch vellum.
