Description
DU PERRON (Jacques). Harangue faicte de la part de la chambre ecclesiastique, en celle du tiers Estat, sur l'article du serment. Paris, Antoine Estienne, 1615. In-4, soft vellum (contemporary binding). Rare first edition of this important speech delivered to the Estates General in 1614.
Cardinal du Perron (1556-1618) argued in favour of ultramontane doctrines, against an article supported by the Third Estate "which proposed a fundamental law of the kingdom affirming that no spiritual or temporal power had the right to deprive the sacred person of the king of his kingdom or to dispense the subjects from fidelity" (J. Collins and M. Greengrass). Du Perron won his case and the pope thanked him.
From the libraries of Abbé Gaultier, canon of Reims, and of the Congrégation du Saint-Esprit, with three wet seals to the title.
Some foxing, small marginal worm damage to first two leaves.
