GOUSSANCOURT (Mathieu de). Le Martyrologe des chevaliers de S. Jean de Hierusalem, dits de Malte, contenant leurs éloges, armes, blasons, preuves de chevalerie, et descente généalogique de la plus-part des maisons illustres de l'Europe. Paris, Francois Noël et la veuve Guillaume Le Noir, 1643. 2 volumes in one in-folio volume, fawn morocco basane, gilt roulettes and fillets framing, boards covered with a fleur-de-lys pattern alternating with the number AA crowned, spine similarly decorated, gilt edges (Binding of the period). First edition of this imposing work on the Order of Malta, written by Mathieu de Goussancourt (1583-1660), a Celestine monk. It was reprinted in 1654 and 1663.
The illustration consists of 4 double-page genealogical plates and more than 500 mid-page coats of arms in the text, engraved with burin by Michael van Lochom.
A title-frontispiece decorated with the coats of arms of the Moors, Tartars, Persians, Turks, Sultans and Tamerlane has been added to the copy, together with a portrait of Louis XIV as a child engraved by Alexandre Boudan.
An attractive copy in a handsome sown binding with the cipher of Queen Anne of Austria.
From the library of the de Landrian family, with old manuscript bookplate at the top of the title; and armorial bookplates of Count Pierre de Landrian, Baron de Fisson du Montet (1846-1924) and his brother-in-law Emmanuel Grellet de La Deyte (1850-1927).
Lower head cover missing, lower corners worn, rubbing and heavy spotting on second board, light wetness on a few leaves.
