Description
GRAINDORGE (André). Traité de l'origine des macreuses. Caen, Jean Poisson, 1680. 16 pages, marbled calf, spine decorated (contemporary binding). Extremely rare first edition of this curious zoological treatise, edited by Thomas Malouin, which was reprinted in 1780 in a collection entitled Traités très rares concernant l'histoire naturelle. The common opinion at the time was that scoters were born in shells or were produced by rotting wood. Graindorge successfully refuted these incongruous ideas. André Graindorge (1616-1676), a physician born in Caen, divided his time between practising his art and studying philosophy. On the subject of this exquisite duck, and the many lengthy and highly amusing gastronomic and theological controversies to which it gave rise, see Gérard Oberlé's long entry. From the Aug. Asselin library, with bookplate. Spellbinding, hinge cracked, corners dulled, rare small brown spots. Oberlé, n°869 - Brunet, II, 1692 - Frère, I, 37 - Thiébaut 471 - Ronsil 1255.
