HUGO (Hermann). Pia desideria emblematis, elegiis et affectibus SS. Patrum illustrata. Antwerp, Hendrik Aertssens for Boëtius van Bolswert, 1628. Small in-8, ivory vellum, smooth spine titled in ink (contemporary binding). Second edition of this very popular book of emblems, of which more than forty were published until 1757. It is decorated with a title-frontispiece, a plate bearing the arms of Pope Urban VIII and 46 handsome wood-engraved figures by Christoffel van Sichem, copied from the copperplates by Boëtius van Bolswert that adorned the original 1624 edition. The text was written by the Jesuit Hermann Hugo (1588-1629), who taught humanities in Antwerp before becoming prefect of studies in Brussels. A copy of the German jurist Heinrich Theodor Pagenstecher (1696-1752), with a handwritten bookplate. It appeared in the baroque library of Jean-Claude Carrière (2013, I, n°58).
