Description
[MERIAN (Matthäus) and Martin ZEILLER]. Topographia Helvetiæ, Rhætiæ, et Valesiæ, das ist, Beschreibung und Eigentliche Abbildung der Vornembsten Stätte und Plätz in der Hochlöblichen Eydgnoßschafft, Grawbündten, Walliß, und etlicher Zugewanten Orten. S.l. [Frankfurt], Matthäus Merian, 1642. Small folio, half ivory vellum with corners, smooth spine, red edges (19th century binding). Sought-after first edition of this "magnificent atlas of Switzerland and its Alps" (Jacques Perret), published and illustrated by Matthäus Merian. The illustrations consist of a title-frontispiece, two large maps and 55 plates (53 double-page, one fold-out and one single-page) engraved by Merian, showing 73 views and plans of Swiss towns and an archaeological plate. Among the towns represented are Baden, Basel, Bern, Biel, Chur, Fribourg, Geneva, Lausanne, Lucerne, Neuchâtel, St. Gallen, Schaffhausen, Sion, Stein am Rhein, Thun, Vierwaldstadter See, Zurich, Zug and others. According to Wüthrich, this important topographical description of Switzerland is "the most interesting, and certainly the most valuable in terms of quality, of all topographical volumes". It forms the first volume of the Topographia Germaniæ, the masterwork of the German-Swiss engraver and publisher Matthäus Merian (1593-1650), who worked with the geographer Martin Zeiller (1589-1661), who was responsible for writing the texts. Without the final notice to the binder (K4). Some spotting, browning and foxing. Wüthrich, IV, n°1 - Lonchamp, n°3345 - Perret, n°2933.
