Description
Valenciennes, Jean Boucher, 1656. Small in-4, speckled calf, gilt framing, smooth spine decorated, monogram PB on tail, blue edges (Binding of the late eighteenth century). A very rare first edition.
This account of the siege of Valenciennes, led by Marshal de Turenne during the Franco-Spanish War, is dedicated to the commander of the Spanish army that broke the siege and liberated the town, Juan José of Austria, legitimate son of Philip IV of Spain and governor of the Spanish Netherlands.
The title is adorned with a vignette bearing the town's coat of arms (reversed). The copy does not contain the folding map of Valenciennes engraved on copper by Antoine Michel, nor its legend printed on a folding leaf, but it is enriched by a large map of the siege of the town engraved on copper at the time, titled Secours de la ville de Valenciene, ataque des lignes & desroute de l'armée françoise le 16e de juillet 1650, par son Alteze Royalle [sic], and a view of the siege engraved in etching added as a frontispiece.
A precious copy of the Empress Josephine (1763-1814) from Malmaison, with the cipher PB [Pagerie-Bonaparte] at the foot and on the first board the mention Malmaison. According to Anne Lamort, these bindings were produced in large numbers around 1800 by the bookbinder Charles-Pierre Bizouard.
From the Arthur Dinaux library (1865, III, n°1983), in Montataire, with a long handwritten note dated 1861.
Attached is a booklet: Reglement decreté par Messieurs du magistrat et conseil de la ville de Valenciennes le huictieme de juillet 1658. Valenciennes, Jean Boucher, 1665 (8 ff.) and a placard dated 23 August 1655, warning the population of Valenciennes against the Ministers of France.
Angular restoration to title deleting a letter; some foxing; small ink stain to second board.
Répertoire XVIIe s., XV, 234, n°80.
