Description
URFÉ (Honoré d'). L'Astrée. - La Vraye Astrée. - La Conclusion et dernière partie d'Astrée. Paris, Augustin Courbé, Antoine de Sommaville, Philippe Gaultier, s.d.-1631-1634. 5 volumes in-8, soft vellum (contemporary binding). The novelistic masterpiece by Honoré d'Urfé (1567-1625), who published only the first three parts, the last two having been edited after his death by his secretary Balthazar Baro. The true first complete collective edition of L'Astrée was printed in 1630, but it is extremely rare to find it in uniform copies. A composite copy, as is usually the case, bringing together the five parts of this voluminous novel in the edition shared between Antoine de Sommaville and Augustin Courbé - with the exception of the third part, which was published by Philippe Gaultier - all over the course of a few years between 1630-1631 and 1634. The set is decorated with four title-frontispieces (the fourth part has none) and eight portraits of Urfé, Astrée and Baro (repeated). Copy in uniform contemporary vellum. 8 ff. missing from volume III (pp. 17-32); title of volume IV missing and portrait of Urfé (f. A2) pasted on verso. Worm damage, tears sometimes with small tears, some leaves gnawed in the margins with slight tears, some foxing. Slight loss of vellum at the edges.
