VIRGILE. Les Œuvres, traduites en prose ; enrichies de figures, tables, remarques, commentaires, éloges, & vie de l'auteur. Paris, Toussaint Quinet, 1649. 2 parts in one volume, granite calf, double fillet, spine decorated with fleurons in the centre, slightly marbled edges (period binding). First edition of the prose translation of Virgil's works with remarks and notes by the great scholar and print lover Michel de Marolles (1600-1681). The illustration includes a fine portrait of the Abbé de Marolles by Claude Mellan, dated 1648, as well as a frontispiece and 22 fine full-page plates, including eight hors texte drawn and engraved in intaglio by François Chauveau. Binding worn, missing headpieces. Some wormholes and spotting.
