BASAN (Pierre-François). Recueil d'estampes gravées d'après les tableaux du cabinet de Mgr le Duc de Choiseul. Paris, by the author, 1771. In-4, red morocco, forged roulette decorated with fleurons at the corners and centres, ornate spine, wavy fillet inside, gilt edges (Binding of the period). First edition of this sumptuous collection entirely engraved in intaglio, "a very fine collection, well engraved, based on the magnificent paintings that the Duc de Choiseul sold after his disgrace in 1772", writes Cohen. The work consists of a title-frontispiece by Choffard (with the dedication engraved on the verso), an unsigned portrait of the Duc de Choiseul, 12 pp. of descriptive notes and 128 prints interpreted by Baquoy, Binet, Delvaux, Dunker, Germain, Ingouf, Ponce, Wiehl and others, under the direction of the publisher and print dealer Pierre-François Basan. The copy is enriched by a second unsigned portrait of the Duc de Choiseul. Plate 87 is entitled Lot et ses filles, plates 10 and 39 are in double state and plate 89 is on fine paper.
