Paris, Briasson, Despilly, Hardy, 1760. 8 pages, marbled calf, gilt arms, spine decorated, red edges (period binding). First edition of one of the best works on the art of dials, considered at the time to be a clear and useful guide on both theoretical and practical aspects. It is illustrated with a frontispiece, a map and thirty-four folding plates, engraved by Maniere, Lattré and Meunier, numbered 1-34 with one additional plate (continuation of plate 27). A very fine copy bearing the arms of Emmanuel-Dieudonné de Hautefort (1700-1777), marquis of Hautefort, Surville and Sarcelles, knight of Malta and of the king's orders, French ambassador to Vienna from 1749 to 1752. Rubbing, small missing head cover, small wormholes in one plate, rare foxing, one plate loose.
