Description
BERGMAN (Torbern). Manuel du minéralogiste, ou sciagraphie du règne minéral, distribué d'après l'analyse chimique. Paris, Cuchet, 1784. In-8, marbled calf, framed with a cold fillet, smooth spine decorated, red edges (Binding of the period). First French edition, translated by Jean-André Mongez and illustrated with a plate of tools engraved by Sellier.
A Swedish mineralogist and chemist, Bergman (1735-1784) devoted most of his research to the chemistry of metals. A pupil of Linnaeus, he developed a classification of minerals based on their chemical characteristics, on which the Saxon mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner based his definitive classification. In 1793, Werner gave his name to a mineral species, torbernite.
Small wormholes in one hinge, rubbing, small loss at head cover, some foxing.
