Description
CABINET DES FÉES (Le), ou Collection choisie de contes de fées, et autres contes merveilleux. Amsterdam ; Paris, rue et hôtel Serpente [Cuchet], 1785-1789. 41 volumes in-8, half marbled basane with vellum corners, smooth spine decorated, speckled edges (period binding). First edition of one of the best collections of fairy tales. This monumental work, compiled by Charles-Joseph de Mayer and Charles-Georges Garnier, brings together tales by Perrault, Fénelon, Mme d'Aulnoy, Hamilton, Caylus, Rousseau, the Thousand and One Nights translated by Galland, and others, in the first 36 volumes, followed by an introduction on the origin of the genre, notes on the authors and a list of their works in the 37th volume, and a Suite des Mille et une nuits, translated by Dom Chavis and Jacques Cazotte in the last four volumes. Beautifully illustrated by Marillier, with 120 copper-engraved hors texte figures by Berthet, Biosse, Choffard, Delignon and others. These engravings, in their first edition, "revolutionised the illustration of fairy tales by their number, their size - no longer vignettes on a third of a page but plates - the quality of their execution and their evocative power" (Il était une fois... les Contes de fées, BnF). Decorative set in contemporary binding. Some worm spotting and minor damage to bindings, some foxing. Cohen, 198.
