DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU (Henri-Louis). Traité des arbres et arbustes qui se cultivent en France en pleine terre. Paris, Guérin & Delatour, 1755. 2 volumes in-4, marbled basane, spine decorated, red edges (period binding). First edition of one of the best treatises on arboriculture of the eighteenth century, "the definitive work on the subject in France at that time" (Johnston). The work is illustrated with 250 wood-engraved plates taken from Mattioli's famous herbarium published in Venice in 1583, to which the publisher has added 4 copper-engraved plates, an allegorical vignette by Nicolas Ozanne and 182 figures in the text of flowers and seeds, in the first edition. In 1754, Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) was entrusted with the task of compiling a complete Treatise on Woods and Forests consisting of five independent works, each complete in its own right. The Traité des arbres et arbustes (Treatise on Trees and Shrubs) of 1755 was the cornerstone of this edifice, established as a reasoned flora based on Tournefort's classification. It made its author "the creator of forest botany", according to Davy de Virville. A very good copy in contemporary binding. Armorial bookplate with the motto "Sic propriis consuluit otiis anno 1736", attributed to Alfonso Vincenzo Fontanelli (1706-1777). Discrete restorations, minor spotting on the boards, small worm work filled in on the spine, title and two endpapers of the first volume.
