EHRMANN (Friedrich Ludwig) and Antoine-Laurent de LAVOISIER. Essai d'un art de fusion à l'aide de l'air du feu, ou Air vital... suivi des Mémoires de Mr. Lavoisier sur le même sujet. Strasbourg, Treuttel ; Paris, Cuchet, 1787. In-12, fawn half-basane, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges (Binding of the period). First edition of Jean-François de Fontallard's French translation of Ehrmann's 1786 essay, Versuch einer Schmelzkunst, followed by the first paperback edition of three memoirs by Lavoisier published in the Mémoires de l'Académie des Sciences in 1785. The publication, with a joint preface by Lavoisier, Berthollet and Fourcroy, compares Ehrmann's experiments on combustion with those of Lavoisier, which were conducted "separately and without communication, and which agree strikingly on almost all points" (Introduction, p. V). It is illustrated with three folding engraved plates. Rubbing, one hinge missing, small worm hole in spine.
