Description
ESPAGNAC (Jean-Baptiste de Sahuguet d'Amarzit, baron d'). Histoire de Maurice, comte de Saxe. Paris, Philippe-Denys Pierres, 1775. 2 volumes in-4, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, fleurs-de-lys at the corners, coat-of-arms in the centre, spine decorated, olive morocco title-pieces, gilt inner lace, gilt edges (Period binding). Authorised second edition of one of the best works on the campaigns of the Marshal of Saxony, corrected and considerably enlarged by the author. It is the first edition printed in the noble in-4 format, after two in-12 editions: the Paris original of 1773 and the counterfeit published in Utrecht the following year. It is dedicated to Louis XVI. The frontispiece features a fine portrait of Maurice de Saxe after Hyacinthe Rigaud, engraved in intaglio by Petit. A former aide-de-camp and friend of Marshal de Saxe, Baron d'Espagnac (1713-1783) had been colonel of the Grenadiers-Royaux d'Espagnac regiment at the Battle of Rocourt in 1746, before becoming governor of the Hôtel des Invalides in 1766, where he is buried. A large paper copy bound in red morocco with the arms of the Prince de Condé. The only son of Louis XV's first minister, Louis-Joseph de Bourbon-Condé (1736-1818), Prince de Condé, Duc de Bourbon, was colonel general of the infantry in 1780; he emigrated as soon as the Bastille was taken to form and take command of the army of the Princes. The armorial iron is not reproduced in OHR, 2635, where it is however stated that "this prince, who loved letters and the arts and who was the author of an Essay on the life of the Great Condé, had many binding irons". The titles bear the stamps of the Bibliothèque du Roi in the Louvre, the Bibliothèque Impériale in the Louvre and the Cabinet de S.M. l'Empereur et Roi (stamped twice). Attached is a manuscript order bearing the autograph signature of the Marshal of Saxony, on paper bearing his name and decorated with his arms and those of France engraved on wood. From the libraries of Octave Homberg (1938, no. 12, binding reproduced on plate IV) and Christian Lazard (1967, no. 24), with bookplates. A precious copy of important provenance, without the atlas of maps and battle plans. Heads, spine ends and corners a little rubbed, rare scattered foxing, bookplate removed from upper flyleaf.
