Description
[FESTIVAL]. Le Sacre de Louis XV, roy de France et de Navarre, dans l'église de Reims, le dimanche xxv octobre mdccxxii. S.l.n.d. [Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1731]. Large folio, blue morocco, large frame of gilt connecting plates, royal coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated with the repeated royal cipher, interior lace, gilt edges (Padeloup). First edition of this sumptuous festive book, published by Antoine Danchet under the direction of Jean-Paul Bignon and Claude Gros de Boze to commemorate the coronation of Louis XV.
Entirely engraved, this "magnificent volume" (Cohen) is adorned with a title-frontispiece, nine double-page plates by Audran, Beauvais, Cochin, Larmessin, Tardieu, Edelinck and others, showing the main stages of the coronation, and thirty plates devoted to the ceremonial costumes of the king and the great officers of the crown, engraved after drawings by Pierre Dulin and Pierre-Josse Perrot.
The edition was printed at the expense of Louis XV, who had reserved all copies for himself to give to those he wished to honour. Begun in 1722, the work was not presented to the King until 24 December 1731.
"This book is a dazzling example of eighteenth-century art, and one that must be opened if one wishes to appreciate the pomp and grandeur of a ceremony such as the coronation of a king" (Morgand).
A present-day copy bound by Antoine-Michel Padeloup (1685-1758) in blue morocco with the arms and cipher of Louis XV and the "grande dorure" decoration specially designed by the bookbinder for this work, in its variant with four plates (type B), with Padeloup's first label pasted to the foot of the last plate; without mentioning his title of bookbinder to the king, it indicates a book bound by him before August 1733.
Leather split over 40 cm along the spine of the second plate, traces of wear to the binding, lower headband trimmed, some leaves foxed and some light browning.
Three folio prints on the coronation of Louis XVI and the cathedral of Reims.
