Description
LAVOISIER (Antoine-Laurent de). Traité élémentaire de chimie, presented in a new order and according to modern discoveries. Paris, Cuchet, 1789. 2 volumes in-8, marbled basane, framed with a cold fillet, smooth spine decorated (Binding of the period). First edition of one of the most important treatises on chemistry, which had an influence comparable to that of Newton for physics: "this book accomplished a chemical revolution" (Printing and the Mind of Man). The illustration includes thirteen plates engraved by Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze, Lavoisier's wife; the first volume includes two folded tables. A second edition copy, in two volumes, with the addition of the Tables à l'usage des chimistes, the table of contents, three Extraits des registres de l'Académie des Sciences and the errata. Only a few copies of the first printing, in a single volume, are known. Spellbinding, one spine and one headcap missing, pale freckles.
