Description
[LONGUE (Louis-Pierre de). Les Princesses malabares, ou le célibat philosophique. Andrinople [Paris], Thomas Franco, 1734. In-12, granite calf, spine decorated, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this utopian, libertine and anti-religious novel, set in India, which was condemned to fire by a ruling of the Paris Parliament in December 1734. Through a description of the customs of the island of Malabar, where the main theme is the relationship between men and women, the author offers a satirical critique of religious systems, the tyrants of the human race. The key to the names cited in the form of anagrams is printed at the end of the volume. The author is Louis-Pierre de Longue, who was attached to the House of Conti, but it has also been attributed to Lenglet-Dufresnoy or to a certain Quesnel, who died in the Bastille. One headband trimmed, two jaws split, corners worn. Peignot, Livres condamnés, II, 53-54 - Drujon, II, 808 - Caillet, n°6784 - Hartig-Soboul, 46.
