Description
RIPA (Cesare) and Johann Georg HERTEL. [Historiæ et allegoriæ projectæ et designatæ]. Allerley Künsten und Wissenschafften dienlicher Sinnbildern und Gedancken. Augsburg, J. G. Hertel, s.d. [1758-1760]. 2 volumes in one in-4, half vellum with corners, smooth spine titled in ink, spotted edges (later binding). First edition of this work, entirely engraved on copper, for which the publisher Johann Georg Hertel himself wrote the Latin and French texts for each emblem.
One of the rare copies complete with the 200 allegorical plates engraved after Gottfried Eichler by several artists including Jeremias Wachsmuth, plus 10 mock-titles and 4 index pages in Latin and German.
A superb baroque interpretation of the classic work by Cesare Ripa (c. 1560-1622), originally published in Italian without illustrations in 1593.
Landwehr, German, n°505 (which counts only 113 ff.) - Berlin Kat., n°4595 - Guilmard, 439.
