First edition of one of the first histories of the French navy.
Frédéric Chassériau (1807-1881), the painter's elder brother, was Admiral Duperré's chief of staff at the Ministry of the Navy. A naval historiographer, he also wrote a Précis sur l'abolition de l'esclavage dans les colonies anglaises (1840-1841, 5 vols.) and État maritime de la France (1847).
A magnificent copy on large paper bound with the Duke of Nemours' cipher.
The second son of Louis-Philippe and Marie-Amélie de Bourbon-Sicile, Louis d'Orléans (1814-1896) was a lieutenant-general in the royal army and a member of the Chamber of Peers. He distinguished himself during the conquest of Algeria, in particular the capture of Constantine in 1837.

From the libraries of the Duc de Vendôme (1932, II, no. 1348) and Sir Abdy (1975, I, no. 61).
