Description
DURET (Théodore). History of the Impressionist painters. Pissarro, Claude Monet, Sisley, Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Cézanne, Guillaumin. Paris, H. Floury, 1906. Small in-4, pink chagrin, framed with gilt fillet, spine decorated, smooth edges, cover (Seigneur). This is a sought-after first edition containing five original etchings by Pissaro, Renoir, Cézanne and Guillaumin, plus a woodcut by Lucien Pissaro, an etching after Alfred Sisley and numerous in- and out-of-text reproductions in black and in colour.
Théodore Duret (1838-1927), a fervent defender of Impressionism and promoter of Japanese art in France, was a regular contributor to the Revue Blanche, in which he wrote many articles on Monet, Renoir, Whistler, Hokusaï, etc.
A mint-bound copy, complete with the etchings: Les Faneuses by Camille Pissarro, Femme nue assise and Femme nue couchée by Auguste Renoir, Portrait de Guillaumin by Paul Cézanne and Vue près de Saardam by Armand Guillaumin.
