Description
ORLÉANS (Philippe d'). A hunting expedition in Nepaul. Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1892. Large in-8, navy blue morocco, double frame of gilt fillets decorated with mosaic fleurs-de-lis at the corners, spine decorated with mosaic fleurs-de-lis, gilt supralibris at the tail, inner lace, gilt edges, cover (Marius Michel). Rare first edition, printed in an edition of 200 numbered copies which were not put on the market.
The illustration consists of 15 beautiful lithographed plates in black, including the frontispiece, and a large map in colour.
In this work, Duke Philippe d'Orléans (1869-1926) recounts an expedition to India and Nepal in 1888, and in particular his tiger-hunting exploits.
Autograph signed letter: To Monsieur Arthur Meyer, souvenir de qui se souvient, Philippe duc d'Orléans.
A very fine copy, luxuriously bound by Marius Michel for Arthur Meyer (1844-1924), editor of Le Gaulois, with his emblematic cock gilt on the tail and his bookplate (Mes livres, mes dessins, mes autographes, 1921, no. 390, and cat. 1924, no. 443).
The enthusiast has enriched it with three original items: a l.a.s. from François Coppée to Arthur Meyer (n.d., 1. p. in-8); a l.a.s. from Philippe d'Orléans to the conscripts of my class: "I had asked to do my three years as a soldier. In reply I was sentenced to 2 years' imprisonment...". (n.d., 3 pp. in-12, envelope preserved); and an original drawing signed by the sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910) depicting the Capture of a young elephant (black ink and wash on paper, 229 x 140 mm, mounted on a folio).
From the library of Yves Burrus (2024, n°187), with bookplate.
Thiébaud, 705.
