ROCHAS D'AIGLUN (Albert de). Le Livre de demain. Blois, Raoul Marchand, 1884. In-8, orange half-maroquin with corners, spine decorated, untrimmed (Pagnant). Unique edition of this rare book in praise of printing, whose many possibilities it explores. It was published in 44 fascicles, each printed on a different paper by the Blésois typographer Raoul Marchand. Edition of 250 numbered copies, signed by the author and publisher. The prodigious variety of papers used and the extreme diversity of chromolithographed ornaments and printing colours make this book a real typographical feat and a bibliophilic curiosity. The illustrations include, outside the text, a faux-title in two shades of blue after a Tortat faience, a coloured title after a Thibault faience, a portrait of the author, 2 etchings of Ulysse, an etching by Sauvage and a plate of ornaments after Hue-Pierrot, 2 photo-lithographs by Peigné ; and, in the text, 4 silhouettes by Paul Konewa, 5 figures in the chapter on industrial arts in Blois and 12 samples of various papers, such as papyrus, asbestos paper and several chines and japons. The copy also includes a third etching of Ulysses and a second state of the Sauvage etching, not described by Vicaire. A very fine copy bound in the period by Édouard Pagnant, who worked in Paris from 1876 to 1916. Two autograph letters from the author about the work and the subscription form are enclosed.
