Description
APIAN (Peter von Bennewitz, known as Petrus). Cosmographia, per Gemmam Phrysium denuo restituta. Additis de eadem re ipsius Gemmæ Phry[sii] libellis. Antwerp, Gillis Coppens for Arnold Birckman, 1540, in-4, brown calf, double framed in cold filets with gilt fleurons at the corners and centre, spine decorated with cold filets, smooth edges (Binding of the period). The seminal text of sixteenth-century cosmography, this work by Peter Bennewitz, known as Peter Apian (1495-1552), first appeared in Latin in Landshut in 1524. Since the 1529 edition, Apian's Cosmography has been followed by two treatises by his pupil Jemme Reinerszoon, known as Gemma Frisius (1508-1555), the first on triangulation methods (Libellus de locorum describendorum ratione), the second on the use of the astronomical ring (Usus annuli astronomici). The woodcut illustrations include a globe on the title, around fifty figures, maps and diagrams in the text, including 5 with volvelles (on ff. C2v, C3v, D1v, H1r, M1r), handsome historiated initials and the printer's mark of Gregorius de Bonte at the end of the volume. The second part of the work contains a description of America, dating its discovery to 1497 and claiming that it owes its name to Amerigo Vespucci. The maps on ff. iii and xxix show the American continent. An appendix by Gemma Frisius, on f. xxxi, even deals with Peru and the expedition led there by Pizarro in 1530. A rare copy bound in decorated contemporary calf. Two loose parts are missing from the volvelle of f. XIII v°. Binding restored, endpapers and headband renewed, lack on one corner, some foxing, small marginal wetness not serious. Fairfax Murray: German Books, n°40 - Sabin, n°1745 - Church, n°77 - Lalande, 60.
