Description
ARISTOTE. De cœlo libri quatuor. Lyon, Thibaud Payen, 1559. In-8, reused manuscript vellum, smooth spine, red edges (Modern binding). A rare edition of one of the most important treatises on ancient cosmology: Ptolemy based his geocentric system on the Aristotelian model of the universe, a system that was not challenged until the discoveries of Copernicus nearly two millennia later.
The Latin translation is by Jean Argyropoulos (c. 1395-1487), the famous Byzantine humanist who was one of Lorenzo de' Medici's tutors.
A fine paperback copy in a handwritten parchment leaf. It contains a few old handwritten annotations.
Marginal worm hole, small angular wetness.
