Description
BONATTI (Guido). Decem continens tractatus Astronomie. [Augsburg, Erhard Ratdolt, 26 March 1491]. In-4 of [318] (of 422) ff. signed a-z8 A-Q8 R6, supple vellum with covers (17th century binding). A very rare and sought-after first edition.
This is the only incunabula edition of the astrological sum composed around 1277 by Guido Bonatti of Forlì, who was adviser to Emperor Frederick II.
It is illustrated with numerous woodcuts in the text, in particular depictions of the zodiac. Some of the initials were highlighted in red at the time.
Numerous contemporary marginal annotations, especially at the beginning and end of the volume, some trimmed by the binder's knife.
Copy incomplete of the 14 table leaves and the last 90 leaves (signed R7-8 and S-Z8 AA-EE8), which were already missing when the copy was bound. Sporadic foxing and marginal spotting.
