CASSINI (Jean-Dominique). Abregé des observations et des reflexions sur la comete qui a paru au mois decembre 1680, et aux mois de janvier, fevrier et mars de cette année 1681. Paris, Étienne Michallet, 1681. In-4, brown calf, spine decorated, roulette on the edges, spotted edges (Binding of the period). Very rare first edition of this work on the Great Comet of 1680 (C/1680 V1), known as "Newton's Comet", the first comet discovered by telescope and the brightest of the 17th century. Cassini reports several observations of the comet made in various parts of France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and America. The body of the text has its own title page with the same date and the same address: Observations sur la comete qui a paru au mois decembre 1680, et en janvier 1681. The copy contains a folding plate engraved on copper, captioned Transitus cometæ. The other two plates described in the BnF catalogue (Theoria cometarum and the planisphere) are missing from this copy. Head joint damaged, corners worn. Lalande, 298.
