Description
[CASSINI (Jean-Dominique). Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1693. In folio, tortoiseshell calf, coats of arms in the centre, spine decorated, coats of arms in the caissons, spotted edges (Binding of the period). First edition of this important and extremely rare collection of eight memoirs published between 1679 and 1693 by four members of the Académie des Sciences: Jean-Dominique Cassini (1625-1612), Jean Richer (1630-1696), Jean Picard (1620-1682) and Philippe de La Hire (1640-1718).
Cassini was at the origin of the scientific expedition to Cayenne, which made it possible to establish ideas on several important points relating to the shape of the Earth and to discover the decrease in the intensity of the Earth's gravity, confirming the theory of gravitation. The collection also contains new tables of the satellites of Jupiter, more accurate than those of 1668, as well as the discovery of the zodiacal light and its form.
- 2° Astronomical and physical observations made on the island of Cayenne, by Richer. - 3° Voyage d'Uranibourg, or astronomical observations made in Dannemark, by Picard. Followed by Observations on the costses of France, by Picard and La Hire. - 4° Astronomical observations made in various parts of the kingdom, by Cassini. - 6° Discovery of the celestial light which appears in the Zodiac, by Cassini. - 7° Rules of Indian astronomy for calculating the movements of the sun and moon, by Cassini. Followed by Tabulæ motuum satellitis Jovis.
A complete copy of all required parts and of the two out-of-text maps showing the island of Ven and the French coast.
