Description
CLAVIUS (Christophorus). In Sphæram Joannis de Sacro Bosco commentarius. Lyon, Pierre Rigaud, 1618. In-8, brown calf, double gilt fillet on covers, spine decorated, spotted edges (Binding of the period). New edition of this commentary originally published in 1581 on Johannes de Sacro Bosco's famous treatise on the sphere, by an opponent of Copernicus but nevertheless a friend of Galileo. Numerous woodcut vignettes in the text. Some early corrections in ink. The Jesuit mathematician and astronomer Christoph Schlüssel, known as Christophorus Clavius (1537-1612), who taught for a long time at the Jesuit College in Rome and was the originator of the Gregorian calendar (1582), held the astronomical system of Ptolemy in high esteem and opposed Copernicus' theses as scientifically false and philosophically contrary to Scripture. Despite this, the man nicknamed "the Euclid of his century" was a friend of Galileo, whose observations he verified but whose ideas he did not approve of. Worn binding, marginal dampening to first few leaves, cut and tear to title, worm damage to some letters on last few leaves. Sommervogel, II, 1213, n°1.
