Description
DESCARTES (René). Principia philosophiæ. Amsterdam, Louis Elzevier, 1644. In-4, ivory vellum, smooth spine, spotted edges (contemporary binding). First edition.
Composed in Latin, Les Principes de la philosophie was not translated into French until 1647 by Abbé Picot. It is dedicated to Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia. The work was printed as the manuscript was being written, the first pages of which Descartes had entrusted to Louis Elzevier towards the end of 1643. The philosopher considered this treatise to be the most complete expression of his thought, after the Discourse on Method, which constitutes its introduction.
The text is illustrated with numerous technical and geometric woodcuts, some of which are full-page.
From the Philippe Gentilhomme library (2009, no. 260).
Marginal spotting, some brown spotting, hole piercing the margin of the lower cover and the last 100 leaves, the last blank introductory leaf is missing.
Guibert, 118, n°1 - Brunet, II, 610 - Willems, n°1008.
