Description
GEMMA FRISIUS. Principles of astronomy & cosmography: with the use of the globe. Paris, Guillaume Cavellat, 1556. In-8, fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, spine grotesquely decorated, inner lace, gilt edges (19th century binding). First French edition of the treatise De principiis astronomiæ et cosmographiæ by Regnier Gemma (1508-1555), known as Gemma Frisius in Latin and Gemma Frizon in French, which was first published in Antwerp in 1530. The French translation was written by Claude de Boissière. It is divided into three parts: Des principes de cosmographie, De l'usage du globe and De la division du monde, to which are appended two opuscules: L'Usage de l'anneau astronomique by the same author and Exposition sur la mappemonde de Gemma Frizon par Claude de Boissière. The work is illustrated with 49 woodcuts in the text, some full-page. A copy well bound in the 19th century. Renouard, Cavellat, n°102 - HL, 2427 - not in Lalande.
