Description
GERARD OF CREMONA. Theorica planetarum. Venice, Francesco Renner de Heilbronn, 1478. Small in-4 of [20] ff (signed e-f10), black paste paper boards (19th century binding). Fourth incunabula edition of the Théorie des planètes, published as an appendix to the Traité de la sphère by Joannes de Sacrobosco, of which it occupies the last twenty leaves. It is very rare.
This is the third edition to bring together these two important medieval treatises on astronomy, after the editio princeps of the Theorica planetarum, printed separately in Ferrara in 1472. The attribution of this work to the thirteenth-century astrologer Gerard of Sabbioneta, also known as Gerard of Cremona, is controversial.
The text of the Theorica planetarum is complete here, but bound without Sacrobosco's treatise De sphæra mundi (which occupies the first twenty-eight leaves of the edition).
It is illustrated with eight large woodcut figures in the text. At the top of the first leaf, the title of the treatise is printed in red; on the last leaf, the colophon is followed by a notice to the reader in verse by Francesco Negri.
Spine worn.
