Description
HUYGENS (Christian). Κοσμοθεωρος, sive de terris cœlestibus, earumque ornatu, conjecturæ. The Hague, Adrian Moetjens, 1698. Small in-4, ivory vellum, smooth spine, speckled edges (Dutch binding of the period). First edition. Christian Huygens (1629-1695) brought together in this "little treatise on philosophical matters" (he wrote to Leibniz) speculations on the constitution of the universe and the habitability of other planets. The astronomer dedicated the work to his brother Constantijn, but both died before its publication. At the end of the volume, five copper-engraved plates (one of which folds out) depict the solar system and Saturn, whose rings and largest satellite, Titan, Huygens had discovered. From the libraries of Nordkirchen Castle, fief of the Plettenberg family in Westphalia, and of Dr R. Rickaert, with bookplate. Lower spine cap damaged, small tears on the spine and on one cup, very slight foxing. Lalande, 334 - DSB, VI, 597 - Thorndike, VII, 634 - Poggendorff, I, 1165.
