Description
[KEILL (John). Institutions astronomiques, ou leçons élémentaires d'astronomie, pour servir d'introduction à la physique céleste. Paris, Guérin, 1746. In-4, marbled calf, spine decorated, red edges (Binding of the period). Original French edition, translated from Latin by Pierre-Charles Le Monnier, who made important original additions, so that the work is often catalogued under his name. It contains 15 fold-out plates. "Of all his diverse interests, Le Monnier's work on lunar motion was the most extensive and the most important [...]. They appeared for the first time in Le Monnier's Institution astronomiques (1746), his most famous work. It was basically a translation of John Keill's Introductio ad veram astronomiam (London, 1721), but with important additions and with new tables of the sun and moon. The book, the first important general manual of astronomy in France, was later replaced by the textbooks of Lalande and Lacaille" (DSB). From the library of Christophe Gadbled (1734-1782), professor of mathematics and hydrography at the University of Caen, known for having trained Pierre-Simon de Laplace and continued the studies of Varignon, with a handwritten bookplate on the title. DSB, VIII, 178 - HL, 9244.
