Description
MAIRAN (Jean-Jacques Dortous de). Traité physique et historique de l'aurore boréale. Continuation of the Memoirs of the Royal Academy of Sciences. Year 1731. Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1733. In-4, seeded calf, double cold fillet, spine decorated, red edges (Binding of the period). First edition, illustrated with 15 folding plates engraved by Simonneau. Dortous de Mairan (1678-1771) attributed the phenomenon of the aurora borealis to an extension of the sun's atmosphere, whereas it was more a question of electrical interaction between the charged particles of the solar wind and the upper atmosphere. "His catalogue of auroras enabled him, long before the discovery of the solar activity cycle, to note that observations of auroras show "revivals" of activity" (Lalande). Hinges split, corners a little dulled, some spotting. Lalande, 420.
