Description
MANILIUS (Marcus). Astronomicon libri quinque. Josephus Scaliger recensuit. [...] Ejusdem Commentarius in eosdem libros, & castigationum explicationes. Lectiones variæ [...] cum notis Fr. Juni Biturigis. S.l. [Heidelberg], Officina Sanctandreana [Hieronymus Commelinus], 1590. 3 parts in one volume, in-8, soft vellum with covers, smooth spine, handwritten title on tail edge (contemporary binding). Second edition of the version provided by Joseph Juste Scaliger (1540-1609), published in Paris in 1579, but expanded in this one with notes by François du Jon (1545-1602), a Calvinist from Bourges who became a pastor in Heidelberg. It was printed by the humanist printer Hieronymus Commelinus, whose mark adorns the title of the first two parts. The text is illustrated with a number of woodcut diagrams. Censored copy according to the prescriptions of the Index of the Spanish Inquisition, with passages crossed out in brown ink here and there, and the handwritten mention in the title: Expurgata sunt aliqua juxta Indicem S[anctæ] Inq[uisitioni]s Hispanis. Quires heavily browned, some freckling and marginal wetness, small loss at bottom of f. ã3. HL, 1037 - Graesse, IV, 364 - Adams, M-362 - Riccardi, II, 93.11.
